Winter Workshops - Focus on Fibers

We like to cozy up the studio with colorful fibers to help us get through the winter months! Dyed wools for felting projects, imported threads from Japan for Sashiko stitching and embroidery floss keeps the studio vibe warm and cheerful.

We are also fortunate to have two very talented and inspiring fiber artists in our studio community that will be guiding us through the "hibermaking" season! Mallory Zondag will be teaching both wool felting and embroidery techniques and Renee Johnson is leading a 3-part sashiko and sewing workshop throughout the month of January.

Renee also has a large selection of sashiko supplies, including patterns, kits and imported threads available to purchase in the gallery.

Winter gallery hours:
Wednesdays:  9am – 1pm, 5pm – 9pm
Thursdays:  5pm – 9pm
Fridays: 9am – 1pm

Mallory Zondag is a Mixed Media Fiber artist and artist educator. She graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Fashion Design and her work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Ukraine. She has been an artist in residence at The Allentown Art Museum, The Wassaic Project and many schools and community organizations. During many of these residencies she has led community art programs where felted wool living walls are collaboratively created with students of all ages and abilities. She was commissioned to create the sensory space for Artsquest's Accessible Arts program and was recently commissioned to recreate a component of one of Amalia Mesa-Bains's installations for her retrospective at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

We have learned that Mallory can create anything out of felted wool! If you are new to felting, or if you are hooked on felting and are looking for other "felting enthusiasts" to make with, Mallory's workshops are a lot of fun!

Renee Johnson is a fiber artist that has been exploring ways to re-purpose vintage and antique fabrics. Although this has been her main focus for the past decade, she has been sewing and creating items from natural or repurposed materials for the majority of her life.

As a mother, cancer survivor, and widow she finds that our view on life is ever-changing and she enjoys re-imagining vintage fabrics so that they will once again become a meaningful and useful part of our lives. Renee focuses on traditional Japanese craft techniques and studied under Rei Furuya to achieve her teaching certificate from the International Tsumami Zaiku Association in 2023.

Renee was born in Glenville, NY and resided in Rochester, NY for over 20 years. She has recently relocated back to Glenville, NY where she is a current artist-in-residence at Main Street Studio.
