Mend & Make Beautiful: A Sashiko Patch Workshop

Need a patch for your favorite jeans or just want to add some flair? Join us for a fun Friday night with local fiber artist Renee Johnson to learn the art of Japanese sashiko stitching while creating your own patch featuring one of three traditional Japanese motifs.

Renee will introduce the simple running stitch used in sashiko to create beautiful patterns that both strengthen and repair fabric. While sashiko shares some similarities with Western mending, the stitching technique, thread, and needles are quite different.

No experience necessary. Simply choose a patch with a pre-printed pattern and pick from a wide selection of sashiko thread colors and types. Try one color or many! Each attendee also receives a sashiko needle to take home so you can finish at your own pace if needed.

The perfect way to kick off your weekend — good company, good vibes, and a new skill to take home!

About Renee Johnson:

Renee is constantly exploring ways to repurpose vintage and antique fabrics. While this has been her main focus for the past decade, she has been sewing and creating items from natural or repurposed materials for the majority of her life. Renee is always on the search for unique and beautiful textiles and notions to be used by crafters and makers alike. She also hand dyes fabrics and sashiko threads using natural materials like indigo and black walnut.

If you are interested in mending, sewing, or other traditional Japanese fabric and textile crafts, you can find her supplies online at reneejohnsonstudio.com or stop by the studio during Open Studio times to see what she is working on!
