Carve your favorite kitchen spoon
Couldn't load pickup availability
In this full-day session, we'll start with a freshly felled birch log, and make what will soon become your favorite kitchen stirring spoon, using traditional Scandinavian tools and techniques. We'll learn how to harvest material from a log, and use "Slöjd" woodcarving knives to create a very practical and beautiful spoon for everyday use.
Our approach will be to learn the specific knife grips and cuts that are needed in different areas of the spoon's form. We'll learn about, and pay close attention to the grain direction of the wood, and techniques for getting a clean and satisfying surface. This experience is a great way to learn and understand how to work with wood in general, beyond spoon carving. We will also look at some simple food-safe finishes that will hold up to continued use.
This full day workshop will hopefully get you away from outside distractions and obligations and instead, fill your day with the gentle sound of sharp knives cutting fresh wood. This project is a good way to practice cuts that you already know, or learn techniques that will help you safely and confidently go on to become a more skillful carver.
