Sculptural Felt: Form, Structure, and Possibility
A two-day intensive with Mallory Zondag
Step into a deeper, more intentional relationship with your creative practice through an immersive weekend of sculptural feltmaking with accomplished fiber artist Mallory Zondag.
This workshop is designed for artists and dedicated makers who are ready to move beyond surface-level exploration and engage felt as a structural, expressive medium. Whether you already incorporate felting into your work or are drawn to its potential for dimensional form, this is an opportunity to expand both your technical fluency and your artistic vocabulary.
Over two focused days, you’ll explore how felt can be shaped into dynamic, three-dimensional objects—forms with tension, texture, connection, and presence.
Day One: Technique as Foundation
Mallory will guide you through a series of hands-on exercises drawn directly from her sculptural practice. You’ll build a library of samples while learning core techniques, including:
-
Felting over flat resists and three-dimensional forms
-
Integrating wire for structure and movement
-
Seamlessly connecting separate forms through wet felting to create layers and sculptures with movement and multiple directions
-
Joining forms through stitching and needle felting, with methods for concealing seams
These exercises are designed not just to teach technique, but to open up new ways of thinking about form and construction.
Day Two: Independent Exploration
The second day shifts into a supported studio environment. With access to a wide range of materials and Mallory’s guidance, you’ll develop your own sculptural piece, applying and adapting the techniques explored on day one. This is a space to take risks, follow ideas, and push your work in new directions.
By the end of the weekend, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of felt as a sculptural medium, a set of technical tools you can return to, and the confidence to pursue more ambitious, dimensional work in your own practice.
