Literally, Slöjd translates to something like "Clever" in Swedish. But it's the kind of clever that involves being frugal and creative and practical, all at the same time. Slöjd is about using simple tools and readily available materials (like wood from green or unseasoned trees) to make simple, practical and beautiful items for everyday use.
Creating a simple birch hanger is a perfect example of a Slöjd practice. It uses the tree's natural shape, and natural strength of interlocking wood grain around the branch. The object is handmade with care and has a practical yet simple purpose. The project can also be completed in an hour or less once you get some practice first!
Spend a Saturday morning with us at the Studio finding inspiration and learning basic wood carving techniques that will hopefully become a part of your everyday life skills.
Instructors Jason Nemec and Dan Testo will share tips for finding and harvesting wood suitable for small projects, axe and knife safety, and a few basic carving techniques that will get you started. By the end of the session, you will have a practical, and unique hand-made wall hanger, and the know-how to make many more!
